NIWA reaffirms commitment to clean waterways for World Environment Day 2026

Acting MD Umar Yusuf Girei said properly managed waterways act as natural drainage to reduce flooding in fast-growing cities, and offer a low-carbon alternative to road transport. NIWA plans to keep up responsible dredging, protect riverbanks, and crack down on pollution and illegal dumping. Girei also called on Nigerians to help by disposing of waste properly, planting trees along riverbanks, and reporting encroachment. The agency wants more people to use water transport as a safer, greener option. The announcement comes as urban expansion and climate pressures increase flood risks across the country.
