NITK and EMPRI sign MoU for mangrove-based carbon credit projects on Karnataka coast
thehansindia.comNITK Surathkal and EMPRI Bengaluru have signed an MoU to develop blue carbon projects focused on mangrove conservation and restoration along Karnataka's west coast. The agreement was announced during a stakeholders' workshop at NITK, with officials describing mangroves as a priority because of their carbon sequestration potential and the wider opportunity for carbon finance, employment, and investment. The partnership is expected to launch pilot projects along the west coast and could expand with industry participation. Karnataka forest officials also stressed the need to combine scientific assessments with community involvement and economic support for local people and small landowners. The next practical step is establishing baselines and a monitoring approach that can support credible carbon credit issuance.
