NIT Rourkela Patents Jackfruit Peel Material That Removes 90% of Fluoride From Groundwater
freepressjournal.inResearchers at NIT Rourkela have patented a water treatment material made from jackfruit peel that removes more than 90 percent of fluoride from contaminated groundwater in lab tests. The material is activated carbon derived from discarded peels and modified with zirconium to improve fluoride capture. The team says removal happened within 10 to 20 minutes at fluoride levels around 1 to 5 milligrams per liter. The work matters because fluoride contamination affects groundwater in several Indian states and can cause dental and skeletal fluorosis. Existing methods like reverse osmosis waste water and remove useful minerals, while ion exchange and activated alumina rely on harsh chemicals. This approach uses an agricultural by-product, which points to a lower cost and more sustainable treatment path, though it is still at technology readiness level 4. The estimated synthesis cost is about Rs 37 per gram based on lab scale use. The researchers plan to build a prototype and test long term performance and operating costs. The next useful data would be how much water a gram of material can treat, how the material can be regenerated, and how to dispose of the fluoride laden waste.
