NIO opens solar and storage powered off-grid battery swap station in Xinjiang desert
autonews.gasgoo.comNIO has started operating what it calls the world's first zero-carbon off-grid battery swap station in Xingxingxia, Xinjiang. The station runs entirely on solar power with an integrated storage system, allowing it to work without a connection to the external grid. It is designed to switch between daytime solar supply, nighttime storage discharge, and an emergency mode for cloudy periods. This site is part of NIO's 3,605-kilometer Silk Road swap route, which includes 33 stations and is set to go fully operational on September 26, 2026. The location in the Gobi desert poses extreme conditions: over 100 days of strong winds, summer ground temperatures above 70°C, and winter lows of minus 30°C. NIO says the station can run unattended and provide 24/7 service. As of September 23, NIO reported 4,109 battery swap stations and 5,301 charging stations across China, with 1,060 highway swap stations covering 550+ cities. This off-grid project is a real-world test of whether solar and storage can reliably support EV infrastructure in remote areas where grid extension is costly or impractical.
