Nigeria says it is targeting $500 million in climate-related investment and has approved N83.2 billion for flood and climate emergency response. Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo outlined the plans at the 2026 Alliance for Hydromet Development meeting in Lagos, with a focus on weather forecasting, adaptation, and disaster preparedness. The government is pointing to several channels to move money: the Nigerian Climate Investment Platform, direct access to the Green Climate Fund through the Nigerian Social Investment Authority, and a newly approved national carbon market framework. A climate change fund is also being set up. Keyamo also called on the private sector to help finance weather, water, and climate services. The numbers are targets and approvals, not disbursements. The test will be whether the carbon market framework and GCF accreditation turn into actual projects, and whether the N83.2bn flood money reaches communities before the next rainy season.
