Nigeria's Energy Commission says the country could unlock $337 billion in investments by 2035 by building a low-carbon hydrogen economy using its natural gas reserves. The country has 209 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves, the largest in Africa, and is positioning itself as a major player in the global hydrogen market. The commission has already established a Hydrogen Committee and is implementing green hydrogen pilot projects as part of a UN-backed program. The plan relies on existing policy frameworks like the Climate Change Act 2021 and the Energy Transition Plan. A National Hydrogen Policy is reportedly at an advanced stage to provide regulatory certainty for investors. A recent summit in Abuja produced a 10-Point National Hydrogen Leapfrog Roadmap to guide implementation. The question is whether Nigeria can move from planning to actual project delivery at the scale needed to hit that $337 billion target.
