The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has called for clear and transparent criteria for approving carbon market projects. At a workshop in Abuja, officials emphasized that the criteria must protect national interests, prevent double counting, and align with Nigeria's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). The proposed rules will cover measurement, reporting, verification, environmental safeguards, and registry transparency. The workshop, organized by the National Council on Climate Change and the Resource and Environmental Policy Research Centre, aims to validate practical and legally sound approval procedures. Stakeholders stressed that credible investors need certainty while host communities must receive fair benefits. The criteria are expected to guide project eligibility and institutional responsibilities, supporting Nigeria's transition to a low-carbon economy.
