Nigeria's Federal Government is overhauling the National Building Code to include climate-smart construction standards, energy efficiency requirements, and disaster risk reduction measures. The revised code aims to cut carbon emissions from the built environment while improving building safety and durability. The announcement came at a national workshop on decarbonisation and resilience for the buildings sector in Abuja, led by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. The government is also advancing climate-responsive housing under the Renewed Hope Estates initiative, promoting designs that reduce energy use and improve thermal comfort. Other reforms include a reviewed National Urban Development Policy and new National Physical Planning Standards. The push aligns with Nigeria's Paris Agreement commitments and its Nationally Determined Contributions, though enforcement and adoption across states remain open questions.
