Nigeria Moves to Unlock Domestic Finance for Carbon Markets with 25 Letters of Authorisation Issued
nationalupdate.ngNigeria's federal government is pushing to unlock domestic finance for its carbon market, aiming to speed up climate projects and reduce reliance on slow international validation. At a PRISM Nigeria workshop in Abuja, officials announced 25 Letters of Authorisation have been issued to monetise carbon assets. The initiative targets clean cooking, distributed renewables, and nature based projects by integrating carbon revenues into local banking, capital market, pension, and insurance frameworks. The government argues that domestic finance gives Nigeria more control over its climate agenda and can cut project timelines from years to months. The National Council on Climate Change says a credible Monitoring, Reporting and Verification system is essential to assure investors. Proposed regulatory changes involve the Central Bank, SEC, and other financial regulators, following a model first tested in Kenya.
