Nigeria Launches National Soil Health Scheme to Boost Carbon Sequestration and Food Security
agronigeria.ngThe Nigerian government and GIZ have introduced a National Readiness Assessment for a new Soil Health Scheme. The initiative aims to map soil degradation and establish 774 soil testing laboratories across local government areas to provide farmers with precise fertilizer recommendations and soil health cards. By promoting agroecology and agroforestry, the program seeks to reduce synthetic fertilizer reliance and capture significant amounts of carbon in the soil. The scheme also integrates digital soil mapping and financial incentives, including carbon payments, to encourage farmers to increase soil organic matter.
