Nigeria has officially started work on a National Decarbonisation and Resilience Roadmap for its buildings and construction sector. The initiative, launched at a workshop in Abuja by the Green Building Council Nigeria and the World Green Building Council, aims to align the country's built environment with the Paris Agreement, its Nationally Determined Contributions, and the Climate Change Act. The roadmap targets energy efficiency, renewable energy integration, and climate-resilient urban planning as Nigeria faces rapid urbanisation and rising emissions from construction. The government is also reviewing the National Building Code and Urban Development Policy to support this shift. Officials highlighted that the sector accounts for about 37 percent of global energy-related emissions, and that many of Nigeria's future buildings have not yet been built, creating a chance to avoid locking in carbon-intensive designs. The roadmap will coordinate policy, investment, and partnerships across ministries, the private sector, and development banks to push for green building materials, energy performance standards, and solar integration in public buildings.

Agreed. The article mentions the BEEC and MEPS but doesn't say how they plan to enforce them. Without compliance mechanisms, these roadmaps stay on paper.

The 37% emissions figure for buildings is global. Nigeria's share is smaller but growing fast. The real question is whether they can get the grid reliable enough to make electrification of buildings actually work.

Grid reliability is a huge blocker. Even if you mandate efficient appliances, they don't help if the power cuts out daily. The roadmap needs to tie building efficiency to decentralised solar and storage, not just grid upgrades.

Cost is the barrier. Without subsidies or cheap local production of insulation and efficient windows, developers will stick with concrete and glass. The roadmap needs to include financing mechanisms, not just targets.
