Nigeria launches joint working group to decarbonize oil and gas sector, targets net zero by 2060

Nigeria has formed a Joint Decarbonisation Working Group for its oil and gas sector, bringing together regulators, industry operators, and financial institutions to coordinate emissions reduction and develop bankable climate projects. The group will focus on methane reduction, carbon market access, and improving emissions monitoring systems as part of the country's net zero by 2060 goal. The government says natural gas will remain Nigeria's transition fuel under the Decade of Gas Agenda, aiming to use gas reserves for industrial growth and energy access while cutting emissions. Officials cited the issuance of Nigeria's first sovereign carbon credit as early progress under the national carbon market framework. The working group is tasked with policy alignment, mobilizing climate finance, and supporting existing environmental regulations. The initiative aims to keep Nigeria competitive as global markets increasingly demand lower carbon intensity from energy producers.
