Nigeria's federal government has launched a Joint Decarbonisation Working Group for the oil and gas sector, reaffirming a commitment to end routine gas flaring by 2030. The group will coordinate government institutions, regulators, and industry operators on emissions measurement, technology deployment, and climate finance access. Officials stated that decarbonisation is now an economic and investment imperative, not just an environmental goal. The country plans to use natural gas as a transition fuel under its Decade of Gas initiative, balancing industrial growth with lower carbon emissions. The National Council on Climate Change emphasized that methane reduction is a cost-effective way to improve environmental performance and competitiveness. The working group will also focus on unlocking carbon market investments and improving emissions transparency through satellite monitoring and leak detection.
