Nigeria is hosting a three-day summit in Abuja from June 23 to 25, 2026, to advance its low-carbon hydrogen economy. The Energy Commission of Nigeria, the European Union Delegation to Nigeria, and ECOWAS are bringing together over 50 federal agencies, private sector players, academics, and international partners. The goal is to align institutions behind practical steps to attract hydrogen investment and support the country's energy transition. The summit includes 15 technical sessions on hydrogen production, infrastructure, financing, and regional integration. Nigeria has large natural gas reserves and renewable resources but has not yet drawn hydrogen investments at the scale seen in Morocco, Egypt, or Namibia. Organizers hope the event will produce a 10-Point Hydrogen Leapfrog Perspective and voluntary commitments from participating agencies. Support comes from the EU-Nigeria Energy Diplomacy Project, the German-Nigeria Hydrogen Office, UNIDO, and the African Development Bank. The summit builds on work by ECN's Hydrogen Committee, established in 2023, and Nigeria's involvement in UNIDO's Global Clean Hydrogen Programme. Stakeholders see this as a chance to position Nigeria as a leader in Africa's clean energy economy.
