The Energy Commission of Nigeria, the European Union Delegation to Nigeria, and ECOWAS are holding a three day summit in Abuja from June 23 to 25, 2026, focused on building a low-carbon hydrogen economy. The event brings together over 50 federal agencies, private sector firms, and international partners to discuss production technology, infrastructure, financing, and governance for hydrogen in Nigeria. Nigeria has large natural gas reserves and renewable energy potential but has not yet attracted major hydrogen investments compared to Morocco, Egypt, or Namibia. The summit aims to align institutions around practical steps and will produce a '10-Point Hydrogen Leapfrog' plan along with voluntary commitments from participants. The ECN's Hydrogen Committee has been working on this since 2023, and Nigeria is one of nine countries selected for the UNIDO Global Clean Hydrogen Programme.
