Nigeria loses approximately 24 million tonnes of topsoil annually due to erosion and land degradation. This loss threatens the country's food security and reduces the land's ability to sequester carbon, complicating national climate resilience goals. To combat this, the Nigerian government has launched the SoilMatters project with 2.2 million dollars in support from Germany. The initiative focuses on improving soil data systems and providing farmers with practical tools to restore soil organic matter.
