Nigeria Customs Service is preparing port users for the July 1, 2026 launch of a Green Tax Surcharge on imported vehicles. The policy aims to cut carbon emissions and encourage cleaner vehicle imports. Customs held a sensitization event at Apapa Area Command to explain the new assessment process through the HS Code declaration platform. To offset the surcharge, the government reduced import adjustment taxes: new vehicle levies dropped from 20% to 10%, and used vehicles from 15% to 5%. Customs says the goal is clear rules and uniform enforcement across all commands, reducing uncertainty for importers and agents.
