Nigeria's federal government has launched a Joint Decarbonisation Working Group (JDWG) to cut emissions across the oil and gas industry. The team, led by the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and the National Council on Climate Change, will coordinate methane reduction, improve emissions monitoring and reporting, and help the sector access climate finance and carbon markets. The initiative aims to keep Nigeria competitive for energy investment while meeting global climate goals. The government plans to use the country's natural gas reserves to drive industrialisation and expand energy access. A House committee chair also said lawmakers would introduce new laws to clean up the industry. The JDWG's mandate includes strengthening Measurement, Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MMRV) systems and deploying emissions-reduction technologies. Nigeria recently backed a UK-led global statement on cutting methane from fossil fuel operations.
