Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr Kingsley Udeh, announced that a national hydrogen policy draft is at an advanced stage and will become operational soon. The government aims to leverage Nigeria's 209 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves to produce blue hydrogen, targeting both domestic use and exports to other African countries. The three-day summit on Low-Carbon Hydrogen Economy, organised by the Energy Commission of Nigeria and the European Union, highlighted hydrogen's role in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors like manufacturing and transport. The EU's Programme Manager for Energy stressed the need for concrete investment outcomes, while the Statistician-General called for robust data tracking to support the hydrogen ecosystem. Technical support from Germany and UNIDO was acknowledged, but Nigerian institutions will handle regulatory work and licensing.
