Nigeria's Federal Government has approved a carbon market framework, a key step toward structuring carbon credit projects in the country. Officials at a stakeholder workshop in Abuja said the next task is to define host country approval criteria covering project eligibility, screening, measurement and verification, environmental safeguards, and alignment with Nigeria's Nationally Determined Contribution registry. The framework is meant to give investors and project developers clearer rules while protecting national interests. The National Council on Climate Change says carbon projects must deliver real mitigation outcomes and benefit host communities. The quality of the approval criteria will determine whether Nigeria can attract credible climate finance and turn its carbon market potential into actual projects.
