Niger State in Nigeria is moving to participate in international carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The state government, led by Governor Umar Mohammed Bago, discussed methane reduction and landfill gas recovery projects during a UNFCCC meeting in Bonn. Officials highlighted opportunities in cement, agriculture, forestry, and waste management that remain largely untapped. The state is working with the National Council on Climate Change to speed up Letters of Authorisation, which are needed for international carbon trading. Capacity gaps across institutions are slowing implementation and affecting investor confidence. ICA Finance has expressed interest in supporting Niger State's landfill gas and methane capture projects. Governor Bago said early implementation in Niger State could serve as a demonstration model for carbon market development in Nigeria. Partners proposed a joint training and pilot initiative to strengthen project development and attract private investment.
