Niger State Governor Bago pushes for faster carbon market projects under Article 6
tribuneonlineng.comNiger State Governor Umar Bago led a delegation to the UNFCCC to push for faster carbon market project development under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The talks focused on methane reduction, landfill gas recovery, and unlocking carbon finance for sectors like cement, agriculture, and waste management in Nigeria. The state wants to act as a pilot hub for carbon market innovation. Key outcomes include a scoping mission for project assessment, pilot methane projects, and faster approval of Letters of Authorisation from Nigeria's National Council on Climate Change. International finance firm ICA Finance, which has mobilised over 150 million euros in carbon finance globally, expressed interest in backing Niger State's landfill gas and methane capture initiatives. The governor stressed that carbon markets must work as an economic enterprise, not just a bureaucratic process. The next steps involve capacity building for subnational governments and setting up public-private partnerships to move projects from planning to investment.
