NI Water Completes £2.3m Hydro Turbine Installations at Three Sites to Cut Energy Costs and Carbon
4ni.co.ukNI Water has finished installing hydro turbines at Ballygomartin Water Pumping Station, Breda Service Reservoir, and Purdysburn Service Reservoir. The £2.3m project is partly funded through the Department for the Economy's Invest to Save initiative and uses existing water infrastructure to generate on-site renewable electricity. The three turbines are expected to produce about 900 MWh per year, enough to cover the annual electricity use of roughly 360 UK households. At Ballygomartin, the turbine will power a pumping station moving around 3.5 million litres of water daily to about 4,700 domestic and 600 non-domestic customers. Surplus power can be exported to the grid. The installations support NI Water's Energy Reduce Use Programme and align with public sector energy efficiency targets. For anyone tracking low-carbon infrastructure in the water sector, this is a practical example of generating power without building new dams or altering water delivery.
