NHS Dumfries and Galloway reduced carbon emissions from its buildings by nearly 6% in the last year, according to new figures. The health board's building energy emissions fell to 11,407 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2025/26, helped by LED lighting, better use of space, and new solar panels. Energy use also dropped by 1.2% during the same period. The reduction is part of the board's goal to become a net zero health service by 2040. The board manages 44 buildings across the region, including hospitals and community hubs. Work is underway on heating system improvements, including a heating strategy at Mountainhall Treatment Centre and upgrades to the building management system at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. Officials say the progress shows practical action can make a difference, while acknowledging more work is needed. The announcement came during Climate Week.
