NHS Cornwall installs solar panels at 12 sites, cutting carbon by 223 tonnes per year

The Cornwall NHS Trust is installing solar panel systems at 12 sites across the region, including community hospitals in Bodmin, Falmouth, Helston, and the Isles of Scilly. The panels are expected to generate 1,180 megawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, enough to power 437 homes and cut carbon emissions by 223 tonnes per year. The Trust began the rollout in 2023 and expanded it with funding from the Great British Energy Scheme. The installations support the Trust's goal of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2030, a decade ahead of the national NHS target. Project managers noted the challenge of working across diverse building types and coordinating with multiple stakeholders. The effort shows how public health institutions can reduce operational costs and emissions through on-site renewable generation, a model that could be replicated elsewhere in the UK.
