NH Nonghyup Bank signed a direct power purchase agreement with Hanwha Solutions to buy 4MW of solar electricity, adding to a previous 4MW contract for a total of 8MW. The 20-year PPA will supply renewable energy to the bank's Uiwang Integrated IT Center, making it the largest direct renewable energy deal by a domestic bank in South Korea. The bank says this supports its carbon neutrality goals and helps meet national greenhouse gas reduction targets under the NDC. Direct PPAs let companies buy electricity straight from renewable generators, bypassing the grid mix. This deal is notable because it targets the IT center's growing electricity demand from AI and data operations. The 8MW total is still modest compared to industrial loads, but it shows how financial institutions in South Korea are starting to use PPAs as a real decarbonization tool rather than relying solely on offsets or RECs.
