A coalition of environmental NGOs, including Ocean Conservancy and the Environmental Defense Fund, has released a framework for conducting marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) field trials. The guidelines focus on protecting marine ecosystems, ensuring open data access, and respecting the rights of local and Indigenous communities. Crucially, the recommendations state that mCDR trials should not generate carbon credits until independent, peer-reviewed science can prove the methods are effective and meet high-integrity monitoring and verification standards.
