Nghe An province in Vietnam is ramping up carbon credit rice production for the summer-autumn crop season. The initiative aims to reduce methane emissions from rice paddies by adopting alternate wetting and drying irrigation and other sustainable practices. Farmers are being trained to shift from traditional flooded rice cultivation to methods that lower greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining yields. The carbon credits generated from these practices can be sold on voluntary carbon markets, providing an additional income stream for farmers. This aligns with Vietnam's broader goals of decarbonizing agriculture and meeting its nationally determined contributions under the Paris Agreement. The program is part of a larger push to scale climate-smart agriculture across the Mekong Delta region.
