Nexans signs deal with Hydro for 85,000 tonnes of low-carbon aluminium for grid cables

Nexans has signed a five year deal with Norsk Hydro to buy about 85,000 tonnes of low-carbon aluminium wire rod. The material will be used in medium voltage grid cables, overhead transmission lines, and subsea high voltage infrastructure. Hydro will produce the wire rod at its Karmoy plant in Norway using renewable energy, and the product carries a verified carbon footprint below 4.0 kg CO2 per kg of aluminium. That is less than a third of the global average for primary aluminium. The agreement runs from 2026 to 2030 and supports Hydro's capacity expansion at Karmoy. For Nexans, it secures a supply chain for grid cables that are needed for European grid modernisation and decarbonisation. The deal shows how industrial buyers are locking in low-carbon materials for long term infrastructure projects, not just for corporate branding but for actual grid hardware.
