Newark and Sherwood Council cuts corporate carbon emissions 12% as solar output quadruples on road to Net Zero 2035
newark-sherwooddc.gov.ukNewark and Sherwood District Council has cut its corporate carbon emissions by 12% in 2025/26, bringing annual emissions down to 2,542.7 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. The council says the drop is part of its path to Net Zero by 2035, with internal audit giving substantial assurance on how progress is being measured. Solar generation on council buildings rose from about 84,921 kWh to more than 360,000 kWh after new PV installations at sites such as Newark Sports and Fitness Centre and Alexander Lodge. The council also secured £5.5 million over two years for retrofit work on council homes, planted around 110,000 trees, and expanded its Green Rewards scheme, where over 700 households completed more than 66,000 low-carbon actions. Fleet decarbonisation, more energy efficiency work, and additional renewables are listed as next priorities. The council was shortlisted for Green Council of the Year at the Political Purpose Awards.
