Scientists from Earth Sciences New Zealand are using the research vessel Tangaroa to study how the ocean naturally absorbs atmospheric carbon dioxide. The project focuses on natural alkalinity sources in Hawke Bay to better understand the potential for Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) techniques. By studying natural analogues, the team aims to develop better ways to measure and verify carbon uptake. This research helps determine if adding alkaline substances to the ocean can safely increase CO2 removal without harming marine ecosystems.
