Researchers from New Zealand and Canada are launching a five year study in Hawke's Bay to investigate marine carbon dioxide removal. The project focuses on how natural alkalinity from rivers and limestone catchments helps the ocean absorb more CO2 from the atmosphere. By studying naturally occurring processes rather than deploying artificial interventions, the team aims to better understand the chemistry of coastal waters and the potential for scaling marine carbon storage without damaging the ecosystem.
