New York leads 25 states and cities in lawsuit against EPA repeal of power plant carbon limits
yahoo.comNew York Attorney General Letitia James is leading a coalition of 25 states and cities in a lawsuit against the EPA over its repeal of the 2024 Carbon Pollution Standards. That rule required US power plants to cut greenhouse gas emissions by installing carbon capture technology. The lawsuit, filed in the DC Circuit, argues the EPA dropped the limits without weighing reasonable alternatives or accounting for the health and climate costs of extra pollution. Power plants are the second largest source of US greenhouse gas emissions after transportation, producing about one quarter of the country's carbon dioxide. The coalition also says the EPA continues to avoid regulating existing natural gas plants. A court ruling could decide whether binding emissions cuts on the power sector stay in place, which directly affects gas plant owners, carbon credit demand, and grid planning.
