New York City hits 2030 food emissions goal four years early by shifting procurement to plant-based proteins
greenqueen.com.hkNew York City government cut its food-related greenhouse gas emissions by 36 percent from 2019 levels, reaching its 2030 target four years early. The city increased purchases of plant-based proteins like legumes, nuts, and seeds by 130 percent while cutting ruminant meat purchases by 67 percent and dairy by 21 percent. Dairy still accounts for 42 percent of the city's food emissions despite the reductions. The shift happened through the city's Good Food Purchasing program, which applies to public schools, hospitals, prisons, and shelters. In the 2024-2025 fiscal year, the city spent more on fruits and vegetables than on dairy for the first time. The city also mandated that 11 agencies eliminate processed meat from meals starting July 2026. A separate plant-based default program in public hospitals saw half of patients choose vegan meals, cutting costs and emissions.
