A coalition of 25 states and cities, led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, has filed suit in the DC Circuit against the EPA over its repeal of the 2024 Carbon Pollution Standards. Those rules required US power plants to cut greenhouse gas emissions by installing carbon capture technology. The group also notified the EPA that it plans to sue over the agency's continued failure to fully regulate pollution from existing natural gas plants. Power plants are the second largest source of US greenhouse gas emissions after vehicles and account for about one-quarter of US carbon dioxide emissions. The plaintiffs argue the EPA revoked the standards without considering reasonable alternatives or accounting for the health and climate costs of added pollution. The case is a key test of how far the current administration can go in rolling back federal climate rules.
