New thermal analysis technique reveals how earthquakes and storms reshape Earth's carbon cycle
eurekalert.orgA new study from the Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences uses ramped pyrolysis/oxidation (RPO) to trace how earthquakes and storms mobilize different types of organic carbon in rivers. The technique heats sediment samples and measures CO2 released at different temperatures, distinguishing carbon from vegetation, soils, and ancient rocks. This matters because biospheric carbon can be stored long-term when buried, while petrogenic carbon releases CO2 when oxidized. Applying RPO to suspended sediments from the Min Jiang river after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake and a later rainstorm, researchers found that earthquake debris continued supplying rock-derived carbon for over a decade, while storms mainly mobilized reactive surface carbon. As extreme events become more frequent, this method could improve global carbon cycle models by revealing how landscapes export carbon.
