These indirect greenhouse gases are not listed in the Kyoto Protocol, which still anchors most national climate commitments. The paper argues that these pollutants rank as the third-largest warming contributor after CO2 and methane, ahead of nitrous oxide. They warm the planet by extending methane's lifetime and forming tropospheric ozone. The authors recommend that national inventories and corporate net-zero plans start reporting these emissions on a parallel track, since the data already exist but the reporting categories do not.
