New Roundabout at NC 55 and Indian Springs Road in Mount Olive to Cut Idling Emissions
jocoreport.comNCDOT awarded a $2.9 million contract for a single-lane roundabout at N.C. 55 and Indian Springs Road in Mount Olive. The project replaces the all-way stop installed in 2021 as a temporary safety measure. Construction is set to start in January after utility relocations, with completion expected by early summer 2028. The work will include periodic detours and a full closure of about 21 days during critical phases. The roundabout is primarily funded through the federal Carbon Reduction Program, which targets engine idling and lower carbon emissions. NCDOT notes that roundabouts statewide reduce crashes by 46% and lower fatalities and injuries by 76%. The circular layout slows vehicles to about 15 mph and requires drivers to yield to traffic already in the roundabout. The project also converts the intersection of Indian Springs Road and North Church Street into an all-way stop.
