Scientists at Hiroshima University have identified four new species of rhodoliths, living pink algae that resemble rocks, in the waters off Tanegashima Island, Japan. These organisms, found at depths of 35 to 38 meters, naturally store carbon over long periods and support marine biodiversity. The study highlights that deeper waters host distinct rhodolith communities, with only three of the twelve species found also present in shallow areas. Rhodoliths are a type of coralline algae that form hard, calcium carbonate structures on the seafloor. They act as long-term carbon sinks by locking away carbon in their mineralized bodies. The discovery underscores the importance of mapping and protecting these habitats, as they contribute to natural climate solutions and could inform future carbon sequestration projects.
