This could turn the 18 million tonnes of coffee waste generated globally each year into a renewable solid fuel or valuable carbon material for industrial use. The process is designed for decentralized, onsite waste-to-energy facilities, potentially reducing transportation and drying costs that have made coffee waste conversion economically unfeasible in the past. The researchers suggest the technology could also be applied to other high-moisture organic wastes like food waste, sewage sludge, and agricultural residues. While the lab results are promising, scaling this from a research setting to commercial operations will determine its real-world impact on waste reduction and renewable energy production.
