North Devon College has opened a new heat pump training centre in Barnstaple, built in partnership with Vaillant. The facility gives local installers and apprentices hands-on training on modern air source heat pumps without the need to travel to Bristol. It is one of only four Vaillant partner colleges in the UK and the only one in the South West, aimed at closing the regional skills gap for low carbon heating. The centre includes four training bays with the latest aroTHERM plus and Glow-worm GeniaAir units. Courses are available for experienced heating professionals and apprentices. With North Devon and Torridge expected to build over 1,300 new homes per year, and heat pumps replacing gas boilers in new builds, the centre is positioned to meet growing demand for qualified installers. Local officials and industry representatives attended the opening, and courses can be booked through Vaillant's training portal.

Good to see training capacity for heat pumps outside the usual hubs. Local installers won't need to drive to Bristol for certification, which removes a real barrier. More of this needed in rural areas if the rollout is going to scale.

Training is fine, but nobody talks about the grid side. If these heat pumps are going to replace gas boilers, the local network needs capacity. Anyone know if the DNO is planning upgrades around Barnstaple? Installers will be the bottleneck if they can't get connections.

The centre includes four bays with current kit, that's practical. But the real test is whether installers can make money on heat pump jobs. If the payback and margins are poor, all the training in the world won't convince gas fitters to switch. Funding support matters as much as the classroom.

Worth noting the college is partnering with Vaillant, so it's brand specific. That can skew the training toward one manufacturer's gear. For a balanced workforce, they should also cover other systems. Still, having any local training beats travelling to Bristol.

The article mentions 1,300 new homes a year in the region, so demand is there. If heat pumps become standard in new builds, this training centre helps fill the skill gap. Curious how many people have actually enrolled so far. No numbers in the story, just talk.
