New Furrow Tillage Rice Farming in Bengal Cuts Carbon Emissions 40% and Boosts Yields 15%

The technique, tested across 12 fields in West Bengal's Nadia district, leaves the central planting bed undisturbed and maintains narrow water-filled furrows on either side, balancing carbon retention with nutrient availability. The research, led by Imperial College London in collaboration with Indian and international institutions, shows that Furrow Tillage encourages healthier soil microbial communities that help recycle nutrients and retain carbon. If adopted on just 30% of conventionally tilled rice fields across South and Southeast Asia, the method could lead to substantial regional reductions in agricultural carbon emissions. India produces over 27% of the world's rice, making the potential impact particularly significant. While the results are promising, researchers caution that further long-term studies across different soil types and climates are needed before widespread adoption. The method offers a practical pathway to reduce agriculture's environmental footprint without compromising food production, addressing a key challenge for climate-resilient farming.
