New Christchurch electric wheelset converts standard bikes to e-bikes, reducing carbon footprint
thepress.co.nzA Christchurch startup, Duo, has developed a lightweight electric wheelset that turns standard road or gravel bikes into e-bikes. The kit includes a rear carbon wheel with a 250-watt motor and a front carbon wheel, plus a bottle cage-mounted battery. It offers a range of 55 to 70 km on flat terrain and charges in about 2.5 hours. Retailing around NZ$3,900, it lets cyclists keep their existing bike while adding electric assistance for hills and longer rides. This invention supports sustainability by encouraging reuse of existing bikes instead of buying new e-bikes, reducing manufacturing waste and emissions. The product is aimed at active cyclists who want to extend their riding without replacing their bike. It is in final testing and expected to launch in two to three months, with interest from riders in New Zealand, Italy, Spain, and France.
