New Biochar Model DLEM-Ag-Biochar Helps Farmers and Policymakers Predict Carbon Sequestration and Crop Yields

The model was tested against data from 48 field sites across 12 countries and showed strong accuracy, with R-squared values of 0.78 for crop yield and 0.91 for soil CO2 emissions. Biochar is made by heating organic material without oxygen, locking carbon into a stable form that can stay in soil for decades. The model helps identify where biochar works best, such as in tropical and temperate climates with medium-textured soils. This gives farmers and policymakers a tool to target biochar applications for maximum climate and agricultural benefit. The study highlights that biochar effectiveness varies by location, soil type, and crop species. Moderate application rates tend to work better than high doses. This kind of site-specific guidance is key for scaling biochar in carbon markets and climate-smart agriculture programs.
