Researchers are developing new anode materials for microbial fuel cells to improve how bacteria convert organic waste into electricity. By using biomass derived carbons, such as carbonized cabbage cores and kudzu root biochar, these systems can increase power density and current output while reducing the cost of materials. These advancements aim to make wastewater treatment plants more sustainable by generating power on site. While laboratory results show significant gains in electron transfer and pollutant removal, the next step is proving these materials can maintain durability and performance in large scale, real world industrial environments.
