A new air quality monitoring station in Des Moines, Washington began operating near Sea-Tac Airport. The station continuously measures ultrafine particles, PM2.5, black carbon, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. It is a partnership between the city, the University of Washington, and the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, funded through Washington's Climate Commitment Act. The goal is to understand how aviation emissions affect nearby communities and inform ways to reduce exposure. Researchers will use methods from earlier mobile studies to identify aircraft contributions in the data.
