Ysgol Llyn Derw, a new £22m sixth form for pupils with additional learning needs, has officially opened in the Vale of Glamorgan. The school is an additional site for Ysgol y Deri in Penarth and was built through the Welsh Government's Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme with contractor Morgan Sindall. The building includes solar panels, a hybrid generator, green roofs, and energy-efficient materials. The Vale of Glamorgan Council says the design supports its Project Zero goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030. Bird and bat boxes, new planting, and wildflower areas are also part of the site. The two-storey school keeps a compact footprint and connects ground-floor classrooms to outdoor learning spaces. Upper-floor rooms use natural daylight and views. The project aims to meet growing demand for specialist post-16 education in the area.
