NEUMAN & ESSER and Graforce have partnered to develop an integrated plant for low-carbon hydrogen production. Using plasma-pyrolysis, the system converts methane from natural gas, landfill gas, or biogas into hydrogen and solid carbon, avoiding the CO2 emissions typically associated with steam methane reforming. The modular system scales from 0.5 MW to multi-MW industrial configurations, with a 20 MW version capable of producing two tonnes of hydrogen per hour expected by 2028. The resulting solid carbon can be used in construction materials or for long-term carbon storage.

The energy consumption of 10 to 15 kWh per kg of hydrogen is the number to watch here. If they can actually hit that at scale, it is interesting, but I want to see the actual capacity factors for a 20 MW plant before I buy the hype.

Using flare gas and landfill gas is a smart move. It solves a waste problem while making fuel. My question is about the solid carbon. Moving tonnes of carbon black for asphalt or concrete adds a lot of logistics cost that usually gets ignored in these press releases.

Exactly. If they cannot find a local buyer for the solid carbon, the whole economic model for pyrolysis falls apart. It is not just about the hydrogen, it is about the carbon byproduct.
