Network Rail has opened an 8.8 million pound Maintenance Delivery Unit in Barnetby, North Lincolnshire, replacing century-old infrastructure. The timber-frame building uses air source heat pumps, triple glazing, and rooftop solar to become the operator's first net-zero operational MDU. It houses over 100 maintenance staff and includes 22 EV charging points, biodiversity landscaping, and acoustic fencing. The facility consolidates teams from Grimsby, Barnetby, and Scunthorpe onto a key freight and passenger corridor. Network Rail says the design is already influencing a similar project in Sheffield. The site was shortlisted for the 2026 Rail Business Awards in the sustainability category.

Timber frame, heat pumps, solar, EV charging. This is a solid low-carbon build for a rail maintenance depot. Would like to see the actual operational energy data once it runs for a year.

22 EV chargers for 116 parking spots is decent. Curious if the solar array covers the heat pump load in winter or if they rely on grid import. Also wonder about backup heating.

Air source heat pumps in North Lincolnshire winters can struggle without good envelope. Triple glazing helps. Would be interesting to know the design heating load and whether they oversized the heat pumps.
