New research from the University of Melbourne, published in Environmental Research Letters, finds that reaching net-zero emissions would stop global temperatures from rising further but would not undo existing warming. Tropical regions, which have contributed least to historical emissions, will remain exposed to elevated heat for centuries, threatening agriculture, ecosystems, and coral reefs. The study emphasizes that only aggressive early emissions cuts can reduce long-term inequality. A separate UN refugee agency report highlights how climate-driven displacement is creating statelessness, especially for Pacific island nations. Digitizing citizenship records and equal nationality rights are proposed as practical responses.
